All categorical use of force incidents increased from 84 in 2009 to 115 in 2011. About 55 percent of such 2011 CUOF incidents involved police shootings.
The rise in deadly force police shootings was most notable in the Southeast and 77th Street Areas.
A quick review of such numbers may not tell the whole story, however. This is because when it comes to officer-involved shootings occurrences are reported according to “shooting incident” as opposed to shots fired. The report noted, for example, that in a single 2011 incident "Although 15 officers fired their weapons, this incident is counted as one OIS.”
The report also noted a rise in in-custody deaths and highlighted the dangers of using repeated taser-activations against suspects.
